ENERGY IN TÜRKIYE

Türkiye holds a strategic position in the global energy landscape. As the 6th largest energy market in Europe and the 11th worldwide in terms of installed renewable energy capacity, the country is pursuing a dual objective: strengthening its energy independence and accelerating the transition towards a more sustainable energy mix.

While Türkiye remains highly dependent on imports, particularly for natural gas and oil, several domestic production projects have emerged in recent years. The discovery of the Sakarya gas field in the Black Sea and the Cudi-Gabar oil field are major developments aimed at reducing this dependency. Additionally, the expansion of energy storage and transportation infrastructure reflects a strong commitment to ensuring greater security of supply.

Committed to combating climate change, Türkiye has ratified the Paris Agreement, pledging to reduce emissions and increase the share of renewables in its energy mix. The country aims to raise this share to 65% by 2035 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2053.

As part of this strategy, Türkiye is heavily investing in renewable energy, which now accounts for more than 55% of its installed capacity. Thanks to its abundant sunlight, strong coastal winds, and significant hydropower resources, the country has substantial potential for further development.

Finally, Türkiye is entering the nuclear energy sector with the gradual commissioning of the Akkuyu nuclear power plant, developed in partnership with Russia, with the goal of increasing nuclear energy's share to 20% of electricity production by 2030.
