Türkiye holds a strategic and increasingly influential position in the global and European agriculture and livestock industries. Ranking high on the international stage, it is among the world’s leading producers of many plant-based products, particularly fruits and vegetables, while continuing to strengthen its key role in the global supply chain. Despite a slight decline in cereal production, the country remains a major player, maintaining its place among the top 10 global producers.
The agricultural sector in Türkiye is experiencing sustained growth, driven by the strong expansion of foreign trade, especially in fruits and vegetables. Moreover, Türkiye stands out as Europe’s leading agricultural producer and the top exporter of agricultural machinery, attracting numerous foreign manufacturers.
In terms of livestock, Türkiye has the largest animal population in Europe, covering all species. Although meat production has steadily increased, the number of animals has declined due to falling milk prices. Nevertheless, it remains a leader in livestock with a substantial number of animals. The country also excels in aquaculture, where it ranks first, surpassing all EU member states. This sector, along with beekeeping, is experiencing rapid growth.
These achievements are the result of coordinated efforts by the Turkish government and the private sector, which allocate record budgets each year to support farmers and producers. Various funding mechanisms are provided to encourage innovation, including the integration of advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence in agricultural practices. This approach allows Türkiye to boost productivity—particularly in organic farming—and solidify its position among Europe’s leading agricultural powers.
However, despite a large number of processing facilities and significant production, the livestock sector remains heavily dependent on imports. The country is actively seeking solutions to improve production, reduce animal mortality, and enhance animal welfare.
Addressing these challenges requires specific expertise—expertise in which France is a key player.
