MECHANICAL INDUSTRY IN TÜRKIYE
In 2021, the Turkish economy recorded double-digit growth of 11.4%, with exports reaching USD 225 billion. The manufacturing industry contributed USD 212 billion (94.5%) of this total, marking a 16.6% increase. In 2022, despite a slight slowdown in GDP growth (5.6%), the manufacturing industry continued to drive exports, contributing 94.6% (USD 245 billion out of USD 254 billion in total exports).
Türkiye ranks as the 6th largest machinery manufacturer in Europe, with around 80% of the sector composed of SMEs with fewer than 20 employees. The mechanical industry employs 6% of the total workforce and represents 9.5% of the country's industrial jobs, with over 441,000 employees in more than 46,000 companies in 2021. This industry accounts for 4.3% of industrial production, constitutes 9% of total exports, and contributes 5.7% to the added value of the Turkish industry (8.22% to the manufacturing industry's added value). In 2021, labor productivity increased by 16.8%, leading to a surge in demand and a 31.2% increase in production.
Transitioning from a low-cost subcontractor position in the 1990s, Türkiye has become an exporter of industrial products to over 200 countries, tripling its production value in 10 years (EUR 2.1 million in 2010; EUR 9.5 million in 2019). Turkish industrialists benefit from a quality workforce that caters to both a significant domestic market and an increased foreign demand within the context of a global supply chain reorganization, placing Türkiye at the center of industrial sourcing needs for the single market.
To further meet export markets and enhance skills, Turkish companies are forming partnerships with foreign firms to transfer know-how and expertise. The Turkish mechanical engineering sector, as a procurement market, offers international positioning and considerable potential for international investments, particularly in mechanical construction, machinery production, and as a supplier for intermediate and final clients.
